and participate in gentle adventures and unforgettable relaxation.
Roads in this region are asphalt paved but some are well maintained unfinished roads.
Each year Patagonia is visited by thousands of tourist from all over the world for its
picturesque beauty, crystal clear lakes, unspoiled rivers and streams, its breathtaking
mountain landscapes, ancient forests, giant glaciers, and for its varied Summer and
Winter activities.
Gaucholihue is a five acre facility composed of five main buildings these are Melipal,
Cumelen, Pucon, Ayenhue, Peumayen, Mr. Lopez, and Campsite. Most important
the facility is conveniently located at the foot of Lopez's mountain, Laguna Negra,
and Jackob's mountain which are Sanctuary (Refugios) for experienced
mountaineers and would be mountaineers daring to trek the high altitudes.
The administration office, Peumayen, stays open daily. Peumayen is a 100 year old
structure and is one of the earliest constructions in Colonia Suiza. Here you can
register for your stay, and we can provide information on the various excursions.
There are two types of excursions available the traditional type and the adventure
type. Although we are not direct sellers of those activities we will provide assistance
in finding the best deal for you.
The restaurant, Mr. Lopez, named after Cerro Lopez can seat up to 150 people. The
restaurant is open seasonally and on demand.
Melipal a bungalow style home. It is completely equipped home with all of the
necessary appliances, cooking utensils, living room, dining room area, and bedroom
with full size bed, and a private bath. This home will accommodate up to four people.
Cumelen is a fourteen room A-Frame alpine wood cabin. Each room is equipped
with its own private bathroom room. The rooms are furnished with either single
beds, bunk beds, or full size bed with reading light. Rooms are cleaned daily, clean
linen towels and bed sheets. The full bath is equipped with toilet, hot shower, and
clean towels. At night the alpine air temperature cools but rooms are kept warm and
cozy by a central air heating system.
Pucon is a Hostel, containing about 14 rooms. Rooms have bunk beds and single
beds. Bathrooms are located outside the sleeping quarters (hot water is available 24
hrs.) but these facilities have been improved for your privacy, comfort, and safety.
The Hostel is often visited by students because the rate of stay is fairly priced and
by campers who find reason to stay out of the rain and cold weather that sometimes
happens as a result of climatic changes in the high altitudes. You do not have to be a
student or a camper to enjoy these facilities all are welcomed.
The Campsite is located across from a mountain spring that naturally divides the
property so that Lodging facilities are on one side of the property and camp sites are
on the opposite side. The private full bathrooms are available to campers and these
are equipped with toilets, hot showers, and clean towels provided upon request.
During the summer months daytime temperatures are very warm but can vary from
high to low or vice versa from time to time (see Temperatures). Evenings for the
most part are always naturally cooled by the clean south easterly alpine winds.
However, because the high altitude mountain regions of Patagonia can have sporadic
climatic changes it is therefore advised to all visitors to bring plenty of summer
activity clothing but don't forget to pack a sweater or a jacket just in case weather
conditions do change.
